Bird Sanctuary... hehehe, awesome...

After taking GOSLING out for "sea trials" this past weekend, I can now relate to the ear to ear grin...

thanks for sharing the photos... I hope to have some up of GOSLING in the next few weeks.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures.....everybody... post them soon! post them soon!

I've been having great fun being out in Sanctuary...with an ever-changing assembly of friends and family....this is the reason for all that sanding....and I kept reminding myself, whenever I started getting hung up about doing the "perfect finish" that the perfection would soon be marred anyway by the bump and grind of rocky beaches, and tracking sand and seaweed into the boat.

As for the "Bird Sanctuary"....to really capture the irony of that picture... in the background is Protection Island, a National Wildlife Refuge. The western portion (left side in the picture) of the island is designated as the Zella M. Schultz Seabird Sanctuary. Over 70 percent of the seabirds in Puget Sound nest on Protection Island, including about 17,000 pair of rhinoceros auklets, plus glaucous-winged gulls, pelagic cormorants, tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots, double-crested cormorants, black oystercatchers, and bald eagles. Lots of harbor seals, too.... it's a prime pupping and hauling out area for them. The island is closed to the public (need to stay at least 200 yards offshore) -- so it's literally "for the birds".

Julie,
Great pictures of the building and voyages of Sanctuary. I am building my Skerry at the WoodenBoat class at CLC in April. I have been working on the rudder and sailing parts so I can calm down before the class starts. Hope to be in the water this summer.

Roger --

thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. I trust you'll have a great building experience at the CLC class... I find the whole boat building process to be relaxing...remembering that there is no mistake that more sanding (or additional epoxy) can't fix.

I'm currently building a wood duck 12 for a friend....(my motto: "sanding is a spiritual discipline!")and eagerly awaiting the advent of longer days and warmer weather. This has been a rather rainy winter here in the great pacific northwet....so the designation of my garage/shop as "Noah's Boatworks" isn't too far off the mark.

Well, the class finished on Saturday and we have the obligatory group picture on the CLC website. (My boat and I are second from left in the group pic.) Now the fun begins. I am figuring that finishing will be at least as many hours as building (about 60) spread over 6 weeks or so.

Hi Julie
Photos are fabulous and when I first saw them I liked them and now that my boat is close to finishing, well ... closer to finishing, I actually APPRECIATE them better. It really is all condensed in the smile. I really have to remember your motto: "sanding is a spiritual discipline!" OM!
What kind of trailer are you using. Looks good.
We are having another cold wet spell (snow north of Toronto earlier this week) so my spar varnishing (and bug encapsulation) outside is on hold.
Roger: I was lurking in the background during the class, regularly tuning in to the live cam, I feel like I know you.
Good luck in the finishing!

Christine
I'm currently working on the inside of the hull.

Christine --

Thanks! Yours is looking great! Keep up the good work!

My trailer is a Trailex SUT-200-S. It's an easy to assemble kit (and a fine furniture addition to any dining room). CLC sells them.....
Here's a canadian dealer:

The trailer is light enough to work as a launching dolly (which is really handy at low tide or any other challenging ramp situation)..and on flat ground I can easily roll it around with the boat attached to it.... using only one hand.
