Hi, I've been lurking for a while. This is a great forum.
I have started building from plans. Not to save money but because I like the process.
I've done the sail and mast/boom/sprit (roughly). It took a while for my plywood to get here (Toronto) and I had to do something.
I've run into a discrepancy in the plan / measurements. The stern tip of panel 3 as per the pattern and as per measurements seem about 1/2 inches different. Anyone else run into this?

Has anyone used basswood for gunnels? I have some good boards and could use them if they are suitable. I also have a nice maple board that would work.
All the best

Nice site Christine! I saw your round mast questions on the CLC forum too, and it'll be interesting to see how that will work for you. That will be a very striking sail pattern!

I think basswood has traditionally not been used much in boatbuilding because it rots very easily. That might not be a problem in an epoxy sealed hull - but you might need to be very diligent about sealing any nick in the finish. Basswood machines and planes easily, but since they will become rub rails, basswood may be too soft for that use. I'm just guessing, of course, I've never really tried it. Maple could be very nice, especially if it had some figure, though it's a little harder to work.

There are full size patterns for the plank ends, right? So I'm not sure what measurements you're comparing against. I'd ask CLC directly to be sure.

It looks your helper is keen on the details!

Hi Bob
Thanks for the info about the wood. I'll use the maple board.
The measurements I'm talking about are the ones in the plans. There are offsets to determine where the point of the bow and stern lies on the paper plans. The provided size-as patterns do not exactly correspond to the measurements of the stern end.

That's looking great Christine. Your boat is going to be an amazing piece of work.

I can't help you with the measurement discrepancy since I didn't build from plans, but I bet a weekday call to CLC would clear it up.

I can't wait to see how this boat develops. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Christine ~ Welcome to another female builder! orange
I will look forward to your progress from plans. I went the kit route due to lack of woodworking experience, and I am very pleased with AFLAC!
Did you ever find out what those birds were doing on the wall? Very intriguing!!
Thanks for sharing your life and build with us.

Christine,

Just noticed an article by Nick Shade in the Feb WoodenBoat mag where he uses basswood for gunnels on a small strip built canoe. FWIW
