Henry Beston (1888 - 1968) intended to spend two weeks at a desolate cottage in the dunes of Cape Cod (in what is now the National Seashore). He ended up staying for a year.
This book, written in longhand at the table in the cottage, describes that solitary year and is now one of the greatest nature books ever written. Beston's writing of the natural world around him is a thing of beauty. Not only is Beston an accomplished writter, but he is a keen observer. There is an entire chapter describing nothing but waves... and every word of it held my attention.
This is a must read.
