"Desert Solitaire" recounts Abbeys time spent in Arches National Monument in southeastern Utah as a park ranger during the 60's. His writing style is rough, and very opinionated. A review I once read placed Abbey "...somewhere between Thoreau and Hunter Thompson." However, he is able to combine his experiences, the beauty of the area, his knowledge of history and philosophy, and his sense of humor in a manner that is very effective in engaging the reader and keeping the reader interested. It is about nature, spirituality, and even politics. I found this book to be addictive.
